Kathie is the owner of The Nature Center at Butler Center where she has Story Times every Thursday, an after-school writer’s program, and adventure hikes every second and fourth Saturday. The Center has 501c3 status and has been awarded several grants. Building the welcome center and an old-fashioned one-room school house will begin this summer.
In August 2016, she retired as the Children's Librarian at Dolores Public Library in Dolores, Colorado, where she had six after-school reading groups for children, a writer's group, and pre-school story time every Wednesday morning. Her writing groups were for 2nd and 3rd graders; one Thursday, 4th and 5th graders; the next Thursday, all through the school year. She taught elementary school for many years.
She helped two groups of fourth and fifth grade students write and produce movie scripts. While still teaching, Kathie wrote and self-published many stories with the children, wrote and produced several puppet plays, led an after-school writer's club, and hosted a stamp collecting club. For more than twenty years, she edited the weekly newspaper, The Second Grade Times. She produced two movies with the children: The Field Trip, and The Talent Show.
Kathie lives on and maintains a third-generation ranch in Southwest Colorado where she raises alpacas and teaches weaving in the Weaver’s Studio. She leads the Montezuma County Alpaca 4-H club where she teaches children to work with alpacas and to weave and felt the luscious fiber. She also has a three-mile bluebird trail enjoyed by many guests.
She wrote The Second Grade Mystery, The Spirit of the Library (not shown), and Glacier with her students.
Petals and Paisley is the puppet script she wrote and produced with the children.
She published “The Remembrance Quilt” in the Child Life Magazine.
She wrote a history of the Dolores First Baptist Church for their 100th anniversary.
